Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay quickly became enthralled with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages by means of art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family was for many generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home of a particular Jury member. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a new publicist at a studio. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
